Handel’s Messiah Performed to Sold out Audiences at Christmas Concerts

Huntsville St. Andrew’s performance of Messiah December 20, 2024

The sold-out performances of Handel's "Messiah" last Christmas in both Parry Sound and Huntsville proved that it continues to be a beloved Christmas tradition, inviting generations to share in its beauty and significance. This past Christmas, Huntsville and Parry Sound communities came together to experience the magic of Handel’s masterpiece through a creative collaboration of talent and volunteers from the Huntsville Community Choir and Whispering Winds Orchestra and Chorus from Parry Sound. Musicians both choral and orchestral undertook many “shuttle rehearsals” running back and forth between communities on winter roads to bring this performance together. Conducted by Philip Morehead with soloists Amy Dodington, Soprano; Celine Cascanette, Mezzo; Fabian Arcieagas, Tenor; and Johnathan Kirby, Bass. The Choirmaster was Louis Tusz and Orchestra Director Brenda Muller.

Composed in 1741, this oratorio has become synonymous with Christmas, captivating audiences with its powerful music and profound messages of hope and redemption. Its most famous segment, the "Hallelujah" chorus, has become a staple of Christmas celebrations, often performed in churches, concert halls, and community gatherings around the world.

For many, attending a performance of "Messiah" has become a holiday ritual.  These events not only showcase our exceptional local talent but also foster a sense of community, bringing people together to celebrate the season's message of goodwill.

As audiences gathered to listen to the soaring melodies and poignant lyrics of "Messiah," the message remains clear: hope, joy, and redemption are timeless themes that resonate with people of all backgrounds. Whether experienced in a grand concert hall or a small chapel, the performance serves as a reminder of the season's true meaning. It was uplifting, inspiring and energizing said one audience member who saw the performance in Huntsville at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
